Vision for our Curriculum

At The Langley Academy Primary, we believe that the curriculum is a powerful tool that promotes a love of learning and willingness to explore.

KS1 (5)Values: Kindness, Courage, Family, Respect, Independence and Brilliance

Driving force for Curriculum: cultural capital, internationalism, bringing the world closer.

The curriculum at TLAP is planned around what we would like our children to know, understand, do and be at the end of their time with us. The curriculum is not limited to the time children spend in lessons but the holistic learning and experiences that encompass their time at school.

Our curriculum is enriched by our strong ethos based on museum learning, to promote ‘Curiosity, Exploration and Discovery’. We ensure the children have a range of learning experiences that challenge, stimulate and promote thinking and learning. As we are committed to developing the whole child, our pupils will have the opportunity to be creative, become culturally aware, be physically active and to be academically challenged.

We aim to encourage everyone’s individuality, and support all children to become curious, independent learners. We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that enables each child to develop personally, socially, emotionally, physically, creatively, culturally and intellectually to their full potential. The curriculum is designed to provide access and opportunity for all children who attend the school.  It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement.

By using a topic-based approach to our curriculum, the children are taught disciplinary skills, concepts and knowledge and are encouraged to see links and connections between subjects. Each term has a theme or subjects focus which allows for opportunity for cross year group working or whole school study. For example, in the Spring term, the whole school takes part in a ‘Take One Picture’ project in which the questions children ask about a chosen painting leads the learning for that unit. All children in the school have dedicated freeflow within their timetable in which they pursue their own learning interests.

We use the National Curriculum as a starting point to base our curriculum on to provide our pupils with a wide and varied learning experience.

Learning is brought to life in our school using the concept of museum learning. The approach is designed to engage the sense and emotions to make learning purposeful, memorable and long lasting. Children use real objects, experiences and the expertise of others to provide context and deepen understanding. This means that our curriculum is laden with trips, visits, expert speakers and experiences beyond the classroom. We aim to broaden our children’ knowledge of the world and invest in their cultural capital. Across the curriculum and in specialist Discovery Days, children are exposed to ideas and knowledge beyond the National Curriculum.

The children who attend The Langley Academy Primary come from a range of cultural and social backgrounds and in their time with us we are committed to using every minute to support them in their academic, social, emotional and moral development. We aim to make the world smaller, to raise their aspirations and empower them to  live the successful lives that they deserve.
